Our Best Day

Yes, hauling the double stroller up and down subways stairs was a pain. Yes, staying in midtown was annoying. Yep, Riis had a couple of epic meltdowns. (I'll do a post soon about her unbelievably powerful obsession with "ah-bee" and how it's ruining our life.)

But all in all, our trip was fantastic. Saw old friends and rebuilt Cole's memory of New York from the ground up. He was completely flummoxed by the idea of Manhattan vs. Brooklyn, and kept calling things "New York Manhattan" or "Brooklyn New York Manhattan."

Half of his pretend games involve rolling around on the ground (don't ask) so we had to try to keep him (literally) out of the streets and off the sidewalks or he'd turn black. He picked up on the state of cleanliness right away. "Mom? New York Manhattan is dirty and nasty," he declared matter-of-factly after touching a fire hydrant and coming away with a handful of oily sludge.

My favorite day with the kids was a trip to the Natural History museum to see the dinosaurs, followed by an afternoon in Central Park (now in full spring glory).

Ice cream in the park when you're three--is there anything better? (You should have seen him take off at a full run when he spotted the cart.)

This, um, was supposed to be Spider Man. I don't know what kind of melting mishap occurred in that freezer.

Cole was more intrigued than bummed, and sort of delighted in eating the crazy face.

Riis's cheese crackers made her popular with the ducks.

Cole was floored to discover a real, live castle in the middle of the park. He wondered if a king lived there, so we climbed the turret to find out. No monarchy, but there was a good view. He was temporarily disappointed that we didn't find any "magic," but I convinced him that the magic parts were in the basement where they wouldn't let visitors go.

Late that night, surveying the people walking around Madison Square Garden. It was a pretty sweet place for bedtime milk.
