Independence Day

Seeing fireworks can be a hassle in LA, but we're close to the Rose Bowl, so it's pretty dreamy for us. Last year we had no idea what we were getting into--SoCal's largest fireworks display--but it was awesome, and since the kids don't know fireworks end with a finale, we snuck out early and missed all of the traffic.

However, last year we didn't know you could picnic and therefore spent the night staring enviously at people's huge spreads of food and cold beers. So on Saturday we came prepared, sharing our ratty old blanket with a cooler packed with cheeses, crackers, hummus and chocolate chip cookies. We were actually sitting on a golf course with the mountains behind us, glowing amber as the sun set. Nice.

Who are you? My husband? Hey, did you hear Michael Jackson died?

Sand traps are actually just huge awesome sandboxes.

Didn't take long for them to fully engage.

Sand angels!

He did a total 180 from his birthday. Was as sweet and giggly as I've ever seen him.

Inspecting the always-beautiful cement river, also known as the Arroyo Seco.

It's not the 4th without Hawaiian Ice.

Note the flexing.

Two $5 glow-up light sabers later, we could keep track of them after nightfall.

See?

Not surprisingly, Riis wasn't phased by the fireworks at all. She watched them quietly for awhile, then ran off to play with Cole and her new toy. (Though I suppose she could still have been recovering from her Trader Joe's "Cole pulled the cart over" head trauma...)

Fireworks, family, full moon. Good times.
